Functional Multi‐Scale Integration of Agricultural Nitrogen‐Budgets Into Catchment Water Quality Modeling

چکیده
Diffuse Nitrogen pollution from agriculture maintains high pressures on groundwater and aquatic ecosystems. Further mitigation requires targeted measures that reconcile agricultural interests in environmental protection. However, the agriculture-related processes of catchment N modeling remain poorly defined due to discipline-specific data knowledge gaps. Using field-experimental data, crop uptake responses fertilizer management were parsimoniously conceptualized integrated into a diffuse-N model. The improved further facilitated integration with budget-based assessments. analysis mesoscale disentangled contrasting agri-environment functional mechanisms typically flashy chemodynamic transport-limited chemostatic export regimes. Moreover, former was actively responsive interannual climatic variability practices; latter exhibited drought-induced enhancement enrichment, which could likely be mitigated through reduced fertilization. This interdisciplinary methods provided an insightful evidence base for multi-sector measures, especially under cumulative impacts changing climate fertilizer-use intensities.

Since the late 9 0s, point sources of water-quality impairment have been reduced due to their ease of identification and the passage of the Clean Water Act in 97 . However, water-quality problems remain, and as further point-source control becomes less costeffective, attention is being directed towards the role of agricultural nonpoint sources in water-quality degradation. In a 99 US Environmen...

متن کاملSolving water quality problems in agricultural landscapes: New approaches for these nonlinear, multiprocess, multiscale systems
Changes in climate and agricultural practices are putting pressure on agroenvironmental systems all over the world. Predicting the effects of future management or conservation actions has proven exceptionally challenging in these complex landscapes. We present a perspective, gained from a decade of research and stakeholder involvement in the Minnesota River Basin, where research findings have i...
متن کاملWater Quality and Movement in Agricultural Landscapes
Water quality refers to the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of surface waters and groundwaters that determine their suitability for use by humans and aquatic life. Both natural and managed landscapes provide an important ecosystem service by maintaining water quality, which is key for water supply, recreational use, aesthetic values, and biodiversity, including fish and wildl...
